Born in 1961 in the Bronx, Crash, whose real name is John Matos, is an urban artist.
Passionate about and inspired by pop art and comics, Crash works with vibrant colors in an advertising style. He even lent his style, in collaboration with Keith Haring, to the Peter Stuyvesant brand campaign.
Starting out at a very young age doing graffiti on New York trains, he gradually moved towards painting on canvas and then began exhibiting in galleries. His work was shown as early as 1983 at the Sidney Janis Gallery: he was only 22 years old at the time. In France, he gained recognition a year later by participating in the 5/5 Figuration Libre, France-USA exhibition at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
Quickly becoming one of the major protagonists of urban art, his work is exhibited in major museums such as the MoMA in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
