Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American painter of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent, born in 1960 in New York City and died in 1988 at the age of 27. He is considered one of the most influential painters of the second half of the 20th century. From humble beginnings, Basquiat began painting and tagging the streets of New York in the 1970s, joining the underground art movement of the time. He quickly developed a highly personal expressionist and neo-expressionist style, blending graffiti, symbols, writing, and human figures.
Her canvases, often large in scale, are explosions of color, form, and texture, drawing inspiration from African art, jazz, folklore, history, and current events. Her works reflect themes of identity, racism, violence, and urban life.
Despite a meteoric and critically acclaimed career, Basquiat's life was tragically marked by drug addiction and poverty. He died prematurely in 1988 at the age of 27. He is one of the world's most highly regarded artists. Basquiat profoundly influenced contemporary art and remains an iconic figure of hip-hop culture and the New York counterculture of the 1980s. His unique style and tragic life story make him one of the most fascinating and influential artists of his era.
