Émile Gilioli (1911-1977) was a French sculptor and painter renowned for his abstract and monumental works.
Born in Nice in 1911, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the 1930s. His early sculptures, from the 1940s and 1950s, were inspired by Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. He developed a unique style, characterized by clean, elegant, and dynamic forms, often in metal or stone. Gilioli received numerous important public commissions, notably to decorate official buildings, squares, and parks throughout France.
His majestic sculptures can be admired in Paris, Strasbourg, Lille, and other French cities. Renowned for his modern and innovative approach to sculpture, Gilioli influenced an entire generation of artists. Having passed away in 1977, his work is now considered a significant milestone in 20th-century French public art.
Alongside his career as a sculptor, Gilioli developed an abstract painting practice from the 1950s onward. His canvases are characterized by a vibrant color palette and dynamic compositions, echoing the geometric abstraction of his sculptures. In his paintings, Gilioli explores the relationships between forms, lines, and colors. He creates works where the elements interact in a subtle balance, conveying a sense of movement and rhythm. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in France and abroad, establishing his reputation as a versatile and talented artist.
His paintings are now present in public and private collections, testifying to the diversity and quality of his artistic work, both in sculpture and painting.
