The Citroën Mehari celebrates its 50th anniversary with an Art Car designed by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. To mark the occasion, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac created a series of lithographs evoking the joyous month of May 1968, and "yes, MAY laughed..."
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, born in 1949 in Casablanca, is a renowned French fashion designer. Born into a noble family of Spanish origin, he began his career in the 1970s after studying at the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. From the outset, Castelbajac distinguished himself with his avant-garde style and unconventional approach to fashion. His collections are characterized by the use of unexpected materials, pop art motifs, and diverse artistic influences, ranging from Cubism to graffiti. His colorful, playful, and often humorous designs quickly became very popular with a young and trendy clientele. Castelbajac has dressed numerous celebrities and developed collaborations with artists such as Keith Haring and Andy Warhol.
Beyond fashion, Castelbajac also distinguished himself in decoration, design, and even architecture. His multidisciplinary projects reflect his unique creative approach, blending contemporary influences with historical references. Considered one of the pioneers of postmodernism in fashion, Castelbajac profoundly influenced subsequent generations of designers. His unconventional style and committed stances have made him a prominent figure in the French art scene from the 1970s to the present day.
Still active at 74, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac continues to explore new creative avenues, confirming his status as an unclassifiable and visionary artist.
